VOE: From Tragedy to Solutions

Tune to Voices of Experience with your host Paul Casey as he presents “From Tragedy to Solutions,” Tuesday, July 21st at 4:30 p.m.

“On the evening of January 27, 2017, Frank Gittens received a phone call that every father dreads. His son had been injured in an altercation. He was being transported to Harborview. Frank, who is Black, headed straight for the hospital,” said Paul, adding, “To his horror, his son Chance died that night from eight gunshot wounds. The reason? A sting operation conducted by the King County Sheriff’s Department that went wrong. Terribly wrong.”

During the show Frank recounts this tragic evening. The show will be repeated the next day at 8:00 a.m.

Frank received a financial settlement and an apology from the King County Sheriff’s Department. Part of the settlement also includes a pledge from the King County Sheriff’s Department, to install body cams to be worn by officers and dash cams to be installed in King County police vehicles.

Joining Frank and Paul will be a retired King County police officer and hostage negotiator for 33 years, Jim Fuda. Currently, Jim is director of Law Enforcement Services with Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound, a non-profit organization that encourages members of the community to assist law enforcement in the fight against crime.

Frank and Jim explore solutions on how the community and police can work together better, while easing tensions and protecting citizens at the same time.

“I can’t think of a show that is timelier than the one I am about to air,” Paul said.

Voices of Experience is a half-hour program that showcases people with experience in their fields. VOE has an emphasis in self-employment, but the show also features timely topics including lifestyle, public affairs, health, fitness, and travel.

“Theory is useful, but I like to talk with people with experience in their chosen fields. I’d rather chat with a pilot who successfully landed a plane in a violent storm, than one who could tell me theoretically what he/she might do,” said Paul.
