The July 2015 UpstagedNW! show, “Teacher Walkout 2015: the War on the Workers” is a topical sound poem performance detailing the political drama enacted between the Washington State Teacher’s Association (WEA) and the Washington State Legislature as the 2015-2017 operating budget was being negotiated.
In an effort to to make teacher union priorities felt, certificated teachers across Washington staged two months of one-day walk-outs to encourage the legislature to fully fund legislation already passed by voters including lowering class sizes for K-12th grades and reinstating cost of living increases for teachers.
The Washington State Supreme Court declared the legislature in contempt of court for their failure to fund public schools. Even though the operating budget was signed by Governor Jay Inslee on June 30, 2015, the legislature is still in special session and issues such as funding for smaller class sizes are still not resolved.
